Robotic versus laparoscopic RP

Although level 1 evidence to support robotic radical prostatectomy (RP) is still lacking, a recent study by Ploussard et al. suggests that a robot-assisted approach provides better outcomes than pure laparoscopic RP (LRP) in terms of operative time, blood loss, hospital stay, and potency recovery.

From 2001–2011, 2,386 consecutive patients with localized prostate tumours underwent extraperitoneal LRPs at a single centre in France, including 1,377 pure LRPs and 1,009 robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomies (RALPs). Although oncologic outcomes and complication rates were similar for men in these two groups, RALP offered several important benefits, including reduced mean blood loss (515 ml versus 800 ml), operative time (129 min versus 175 min), and hospital stay (5.7 days versus 4 days)—even when the first 100 LRPs and RALPs for each surgeon were excluded from data analysis to account for the associated learning curves.
