Genomics of noninvasive disease

Noninvasive bladder cancer (stage Ta) can be separated into two genomic subtypes, according to a new analysis published in Cancer Cell. The subtypes can be distinguished by deletion of 9q, upregulation of mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signalling, and an altered metabolic profile. In addition, the study revealed that mutations in the lysine-specific demethylase 6A (KDM6A) are more frequent in Ta tumours from women than in those from men.

Stage Ta tumours are the largest group of diagnosed non-muscle-invasive bladder cancers (NMIBC). The risk of progression for these tumours is low but local disease recurrence is frequent, leading to the highest overall treatment costs for bladder cancer compared with other cancers. Hence, an improved understanding of the molecular composition of these tumours is required to advance patient stratification and approaches for localized treatment.
