Electrocortical Brain Activity During Repeated Hypoxia and Hypocarbia in Newborn Lambs 31

Background: Blood gas and blood pressure disturbances do influence cerebral blood flow (CBF) in newborns. To what extent CBF changes affect electrocortical brain activity (ECBA) remains uncertain. Subjects and Measurements: We studied the effect of repeated severe hypoxia and hypocarbia on CBF and ECBA in newborn lambs (age 4 - 9 d; wt 3.0 - 5.8 kg). Changes in carotid artery blood flow, measured with an ultrasound flow transducer, were used to assess changes in CBF. ECBA was determined using a filtered and amplified one channel EEG.

Interventions: Hypoxia was induced twice by reducing the FiO₂ to 0.08; hypocarbia was obtained twice by increasing the ventilatory rate. Results: Table
