Procalcitonin (PCT) in Newborn Infants in Intensive Care Unit (ICU)117

PCT has been found to be elevated in the serum of neonates, children or adults with bacterial sepsis. PCT was measured in 50 neonates in ICU. The diagnosis of sepsis or not was made on clinical and laboratory tests. The patients with persistant pulmonary hypertension, refractory collapsus or repeated seizures were classified as severe. The higher individual PCT value was considered. The interval between admission and dosage was 0.97 day in the sepsis group and 0.68 day in the other (ns). Table

Results: In neonate with severe distress, even in absence of infection, PCT can be very high, No correlation between bad prognosis (death) and PCT was found, but the number of patients was probably too small.
