Oxygen Administration To Mothers During Cesarean Section Decreases Vitamin E Levels in Mother and Neonates 1506

Introduction Oxygen administration is known to generate free radicals, which can reduce antioxidant defences. Aim To evaluate vitamine E levels in mother and cord blood (CB) samples of term neonates born from elective cesarean section (CS) performed under different techniques of anaesthesia, with or without O2 administration. Methods We investigated 45 women who underwent elective CS: 15 CS were performed under general anesthesia using 50% N2O and 50% oxygen (CSG), 15 CS under spinal anesthesia without oxygen (CSS) and 15 CS under spinal anaesthesia with fractional inspired oxygen 50% (CSSO2). Plasmatic levels (mmol/ml) of vitamine E (a-tocopherol) were detected at delivery in maternal and CB samples (n.v. 15-50 mmol.ml).
