Efficacy of Hepatobiliary Scintigraphy (HIDA) in the Evaluation of Cholestasis in Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) and Extremely Low Birth Weight(ELBW) Infants 586

Specificity of HIDA scans for differentiation of Biliary Atresia from other causes of cholestasis in VLBW and ELBW infants has not been explored. Infants with birth weight > 2200 gms have a specificity of 81%⁽¹⁾ METHODS:HIDA scans were performed on five infants post injection of 0.2 mCi/kg(min 1.0mCi) of Tc 99m Mebrofenin and scanned up to 24 hours using a large field of view gamma camera with an all-purpose collimator. All patients had phenobarbital levels > 15 mg/L prior to scanning. PATIENTS:see Table 1 - NOTE: AS- Stroke, Sepsis, NH- IUGR, KH- NEC, Maternal drug use, JL- NEC, Sepsis. RESULTS:see Table 2

The specificity of HIDA scans at excluding BA was 40% at HIDA #1 and 63% by HIDA #2.
