Irrigation: The most important stage of endodontic treatment? A discussion

Historically, the cornerstone of endodontic success has been the achievement of a tight seal to prevent reinfection. However, in recent years, increasing emphasis has been placed on the role of irrigation. Many contemporary research papers in the field of endodontics have focused on advancements in irrigation protocols, materials, and associated technologies.1 This volume of research highlights the pivotal role of irrigation in the success of endodontic treatment.

Success in root canal treatment depends on a combination of factors: mechanical preparation, disinfection, obturation, and coronal sealing. Although the importance of irrigation cannot be dismissed, whether it outweighs all other factors in determining success is debatable. This discussion will critically appraise the research and provide a perspective on whether irrigation can indeed be considered the most critical component of endodontic success.
