Percentage of teachers who ranked each of seven possible characteristics as the most important for earning the professional respect of their colleagues (adapted from67). Inspiring students’ enthusiasm for learning was ranked as the most important characteristic by 81% of teachers and in the top 3 by 97% of teachers. Other characteristics included being well organized, having high average student standardized test scores, being well liked by students, having an advanced degree in their subject matter, having an advanced degree in education and teaching, and frequently helping their most promising students get into prestigious colleges.
