The manipulative warming experiment followed a paired design and comprised ten 4 × 4 m blocks. In each block, a hexagonal open-top chamber and a 0.8 × 1.2 m plot were diagonally arranged as the warming and control plot, respectively. The warming device elevated topsoil temperature by an average of 1.3 °C over the past decade. See Supplementary Fig. 1 for details.
