Perovskites and in particular quasi-2D perovskites are promising for light-emitting diodes because of their tunable emission, low fabrication costs, good environmental stability and high emission efficiency. The overall efficiency of the device, however, relies on both the structure of the perovskite layer and the optimization of all device components. Murali Gedda, Thomas D. Anthopoulos and colleagues engineered a green perovskite light-emitting diode with improved performance by combining two strategies: introducing a molecular additive during the solution processing of the perovskite layer and using self-assembled monolayers as the hole-injection layer. The addition of the molecular additive, a wide-bandgap organic semiconductor, leads to the formation of a preferentially oriented perovskite film with homogeneous crystalline domains and fewer grain boundaries, which reduces the amount of non-radiative recombination sites. The functionalization of the electrode by the self-assembled monolayers facilitates hole injection because of the latter’s low work function. Used together, the strategies lead to a sevenfold increase of the external quantum efficiency — the fraction of incident photons effectively creating charge carriers — because of improved balance between carrier injection and recombination.
