VISTA dampens T cell activation in injured kidney

Immune responses to glomerular injury can promote kidney fibrosis. Kim et al. report that loss of V-type immunoglobulin domain-containing suppressor of T-cell activation (VISTA) in a nephrotoxic nephritis mouse model increased the interaction between kidney-infiltrating T cells and macrophages; the T cells also released higher amounts of IFN-γ than controls. VISTA-null mice also had more IL-9 in the kidney parenchyma and increased tubulointerstitial fibrosis. In human glomerulonephritis samples, VISTA levels correlated inversely with tubulointerstitial fibrosis, suggesting a protective role.
