IL-1β blockade prevents gout attacks

In a post hoc analysis of data from CANTOS, a large double-blind placebo-controlled trial of canakinumab treatment for patients with established atherosclerotic disease, canakinumab treatment was associated with a ~50% reduction in risk of a first gout attack, but not with a change in serum uric acid levels. The reduction in risk of incidence gout was observed for all baseline concentrations of serum uric acid, suggesting that IL-1β blockade can prevent gout attacks independent of serum uric acid levels.
