a, Anterograde tracing reveals that DPd axons innervate BST, anteroventral preoptic nucleus (AVPV), medial preoptic nucleus (MPNm), ventrolateral preoptic area (MPO), and dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DMH). Tracer injections into each of these DPd targets reveal downstream projections to: (1) the hypothalamic neuroendocrine zone (PVH, ARH); (2) medial hypothalamic nuclei involved in social behaviour, including the VMH, TU, PMv, and PMd; and (3) brainstem autonomic structures such as the PAGvl and PB. The DMH also projects to Barrington’s nucleus (B), raphe nuclei (RM, RPA), and DMX. b, Schematic summarizing the feedforward network architecture through which DPd modulates neuroendocrine and autonomic outputs via the BST, AVPV, and DMH. Projections from MPNm, MPO, and other downstream hypothalamic nuclei are omitted for clarity. Scale bars = 500 µm. Refer to Supplementary Results section DPd connections with neuroendocrine structures.
