It is the first entry in the data dictionary, README, and UPGRADE-E.csv (produced by running combine_files.R) to emphasize that residents are making specific decisions about their homes.

counts_changes_willingness

Whether or not the resident has made any changes to the home other than in the yard; whether any of those changes are high-performance changes (see Antonopoulos et al.¹⁴, Table 1 for definitions), and how many high-performance changes a resident would be willing to make if the changes were affordable.

geography

Information related to home location, including assigned state, assigned county, whether urban or rural, and climate variables based on residence location.

home_mods

Whether or not resident made changes to their homes (e.g., HVAC, water heating, enclosure, remodels, appliance purchases, solar, etc.), identifies specific changes that resident made to homes, along with factors influencing their decisions.

home_mods_landlord

Renter specific questions on pages 78–85 of survey questions, asking which modifications to the residence the building owner or landlord has made.
