Table 2 Framework elements mapped to exploratory workshop activities.

From: Preparing for knowledge co-production: A diagnostic approach to foster reflexivity for interdisciplinary research teams

Elements of co-production

Exploratory activities

Workshop 1: Introducing co-production and the diagnostic framework

Context

Project team context painting (mapped to Fazey et al. (2018)’s key domains of transformational change) and discussion led by project team.

Positionality

Reflecting back (sharing team survey results) researcher positionality (disciplines, interests and likert result on epistemology) and ensuing discussion.

Purpose

Reflecting back (sharing team survey results) research purpose (likert results on reasons for engaging with co-production and valued outcomes) and ensuing discussion.

Power (stakeholders)

Stakeholder interest-influence mapping activity.

Process

Reflecting back (sharing team survey results) on issues/concerns (thematically grouped) on necessary features of engagement and markers of success and ensuing discussion.

Workshop 2: Mapping out engagement processes

Part I: Elements of engagement ‘Process’

Outlining details of engagement plan along a timeline- the why/purpose, who, how, what for engagement

Part II: Mapping sequential pathway via boundary objects

Organising these around particular boundary objects for engagement and mindful of inter-connections (e.g. any dependencies between stages).

Part III: Building a collective learning environment

Brainstorming at each engagement event/boundary object possible challenges or issues and solutions relating to generating a learning environment: those of trust, openness &inclusivity, reflexivity & equity.
