Table 3 Practitioner evaluation criteria of intangible cultural heritage projects threatened level.

From: Intangible cultural heritage threatened-level categories and criteria

Part I. Practitioner

Criterion A: Number of inheritors/learners

a. Number of inheritors

b. Number of learners

Levels (Expected percentage)

1. 0≤ no. <5

1. 0 no. <10

Critically Endangered (5–10%)

2. 5≤ no. <10

2. 10 no. <20

Endangered (10–20%)

3. 10≤ no. <20

3. 20 no. <40

Vulnerable (20–30%)

4. 20≤ no. <50

4. 40 no. <100

Near Threatened (30–40%)

5. no. ≥ 50

5. no. 100

Least Concern

*a and b are considered simultaneously. In cases where different threatened levels are identified for inheritors and learners, the final threatened level is determined by the higher of the two.

Example: For an ICH project with 4 inheritors and 60 learners, the threatened level is classified as Critically Endangered.

c. Number structure of inheritors/learners

If the structure of numbers of inheritors and learners are health, i.e., is pyramidal shaped, down one level based on a and b.

Criterion B: Age structure of inheritors/learners

1. More than 90% of the inheritors are older than 60 years old

One level up in the result of criterion A

2. More than 90% of the learners are older than 35 years old

One level up in the result of criterion A

Criterion C: Number dynamic of inheritors/learners

1. The number of inheritors has decreased by more than 90% in the last 10 years.

One level up in the result of criteria A and B

2. The number of learners has decreased by more than 90% in the last 10 years.

One level up in the result of criteria A and B

3. If C1 and C2 are not met, but the number of both inheritors and learners has decreased by more than 80% in the last 10 years.

One level up in the result of criteria A and B
