We initialize a system of trapped-ion qubits (encoded in hyperfine states of 171Yb+) in a product state where all stabilizers Bp = Z⊗4 = 1 (blue) are satisfied. We measure Ap = X⊗4 on every other plaquette, randomly leading to Ap = 1 (gold) or Ap = −1 (black, denoting an e-anyon). We use feed-forward to pair up and annihilate the e-anyons in real time, deterministically producing a clean toric code wavefunction using a finite-depth circuit and nonlocal classical processing.
