Leveraging Wi-Fi networks for better motion detection

The researchers, who are based at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, developed a frequency-hopping bandwidth expansion technique to precisely control frequency hopping and therefore the spatial resolution of motion detection in a 3 × 3 grid. This technique enables the researchers to capture more frequencies with less antennas and channel samples on a commercial setup, a task which previously required full-bandwidth sensing. A neural network then interprets the position and recognizes the gestures on a timescale of milliseconds using an adaptive gate scheme to dynamically assign weights to each recognized task. Their prototype VR headset recognize gestures and hand positioning across various environments with 86.37% and 89.05% accuracy, respectively. The authors posit that their prototype offers a more accessible and cost-effective sensing solution for VR headsets.
