Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, offers the unique capability to strategically tailor the composition and geometry of materials and devices. Recent advances in AM technologies have successfully enabled the creation of complex structures with a wide range of engineering materials, including polymers, metals, composites, or even biological constructs, significantly expanding the design domain beyond the reach of conventional manufacturing technologies.
Nanomaterials, defined as materials with at least one of its dimensions under 100 nm, can exhibit tailorable properties that are vastly different from their bulk counterparts due to surface and quantum size effects. Over the past decades, a broad range of nanomaterials have been integrated into AM processes through diverse physical phenomena, such as shear, acoustic, electrical, and magnetic fields, imparting a new degree of control that can create functional constructs with unique optical, electrical, thermal, and biological properties.
Nevertheless, the potential of such synergistic integration has yet been fully explored. We are excited to invite submissions on any related topics in the area of nanomaterials AM, from new mechanisms for achieving multiscale integration to demonstration of novel devices possible with such integration, including but not limited to:
Novel AM process development and modeling
Nanomaterial design for AM
Novel properties of 3D-printed nanomaterials
Advanced characterization and diagnostics methods for 3D-printed nanomaterials
Novel applications of 3D-printed nanomaterials
All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process and must adhere to the editorial standards of npj Advanced Manufacturing. The Guest Editors affirm no conflicts of interest regarding the submissions they oversee.
