This collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 7 - Affordable and clean energy.

Lead-free perovskite solar cells are emerging as a safer and more environmentally conscious alternative to traditional lead-based systems, offering the promise of clean energy without the toxicity concerns that hinder large-scale adoption. Composed of earth-abundant elements like tin, bismuth, or antimony, these materials retain key advantages such as strong light absorption and adjustable band gaps, positioning them as strong contenders in next-generation photovoltaics. However, these materials still face significant challenges, particularly in terms of poor stability, low power conversion efficiencies compared to lead-based perovskites, and issues with tin oxidation or defect-induced recombination losses. Addressing these limitations is crucial to realizing the commercial viability of lead-free perovskite solar technologies.

This Collection will bring together the latest developments in developing and understanding lead-free perovskite solar cells to help bring these to adoption. Topics of interest include:

  • Development of lead-free perovskite compositions to enhance efficiency and stability
  • Characterisation and mechanistic studies to understand defect formation, carrier dynamics, and degradation pathways
  • Exploration of scalable, low-temperature fabrication and encapsulation techniques suitable for ambient processing
  • Theoretical modeling and computational screening to predict new lead-free perovskite candidates with optimal optoelectronic properties
  • Interdisciplinary efforts combining materials science, surface chemistry, and device engineering to overcome tin oxidation and instability
  • Prototype demonstrations under real-world conditions to evaluate long-term performance, reliability, and environmental impact
  • Strategies to ensure the environmental safety and recyclability of lead-free perovskite materials throughout their lifecycle.

We welcome the submission of any paper related to lead-free perovskite solar cells. All submissions will be subject to the same review process and editorial standards as regular Communications Materials Articles.
