All-optical phase and amplitude regenerator for next-generation telecommunications systems

Devices that can reduce noise in fibre-optic communications systems are of great technical importance. Scientists have now developed a practical all-optical regenerator that is capable of directly removing not only amplitude noise but also phase noise from binary phase-encoded optical communications signals.

Multilevel quantization of optical phase in a novel coherent parametric mixer architecture

Researchers report an all-optical signal processing architecture that enables the multilevel all-optical quantization of phase-encoded optical signals. Using four-wave-mixing and two-pump parametric processes, they experimentally demonstrate up to six levels of quantization.

Aris Tsirigotis and colleagues propose a photonic neuromorphic accelerator using optical spectrum slicing in a reconfigurable processor. Their approach enables optical-domain preprocessing, achieving 97.7% accuracy on MNIST with up to 30% lower power consumption than digital systems.

High-speed photonic neuromorphic computing using recurrent optical spectrum slicing neural networks

Sozos and co-workers present and numerically evaluate photonic neuromorphic hardware using recurrent optical spectrum slicing for use in ultra-fast optical applications. The approach extends optical signal transmission reach to more than four-fold that of two state-of-the-art digital equalizers and reduces power consumption tenfold.
