Multiple ligands can bind to G protein-coupled receptors at the same time. Here, authors develop a resonance energy transfer approach to study simultaneous binding of two fluorescent ligands to the same receptor.

Detailed study of a rare hyperluminous rotating disk in an Einstein ring 10 billion years ago

An extreme Einstein ring ~10,000 times as bright as the Milky Way in the infrared is studied with VLT/ERIS and ALMA, and the authors find that the lensed galaxy is a starburst with a fast-rotating disk, rather than being driven by a major merger.

Controlling quantum-beating signals in 2D electronic spectra by packing synthetic heterodimers on single-walled carbon nanotubes

Synthetic heterodimers provide a platform to demonstrate molecular design principles of vibronic coupling. Now, it has been shown that quantum beating caused by vibronic coupling can be controlled by packing a structurally flexible heterodimer on single-walled carbon nanotubes. This quantum beating requires a vibration to be resonant with the energy gap between excited states and structural rigidity.

Mapping local patterns of childhood overweight and wasting in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2017

Fine-scale geospatial mapping of overweight and wasting (two components of the double burden of malnutrition) in 105 LMICs shows that overweight has increased from 5.2% in 2000 to 6.0% in children under 5 in 2017. Although overall wasting decreased over the same period, most countries are not on track to meet the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target of <5% in over half of LMICs by 2025.

Jean-Pierre Bourquin, Martin Stanulla and colleagues report whole genome, whole exome and transcriptome sequencing of TCF3-HLF fusion–positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Drug response profiling in patient-derived xenografts identified sensitivity to the BCL2-specific inhibitor ABT-199 (venetoclax) as a new option for treating this fatal disease.

Ellefsen et al. monitor Piezo-dependent Calcium signals in live cells by TIRF and super-resolution microscopy and find that Ca²⁺ flickers localize to areas of high traction force. They show that Myosin II activity and MLCK are needed for the generation of Piezo Ca²⁺ signals and that Piezo1 channels are mobile in the plasma membrane.

Vivianna Van Deerlin and colleagues report that common variants at 7p21 are associated with a subtype of frontotemporal lobar degeneration marked by TDP-43 inclusions. They further show that the risk alleles are associated with elevated brain expression of TMEM106B, which resides at the peak of association on 7p21.
