Epstein–Barr virus exploits desmocollin 2 as the principal epithelial cell entry receptor

A genome-wide CRISPR screen helps to identify the Epstein–Barr virus receptor desmocollin 2 for primary epithelial cell infection. Additional infection assays revealed that desmocollin 3 also aids infection.

The nucleic acid binding protein SFPQ represses EBV lytic reactivation by promoting histone H1 expression

Here, Murray-Nerger et al use a genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 screen to show that the nuclear protein SFPQ suppresses lytic reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus by promoting the expression and accumulation of linker histone H1 on the viral genome.

A CRISPR–Cas9 screening identifies cellular genes that regulate Epstein–Barr virus latency type I–III transition. The authors identify UHRF1 and DNMT1 as major regulators of this pathway. They also show that components of the polycomb repressor complex contribute to this regulation.
