  • The layered iron pnictide superconductors are known for their unconventional electronic properties and high critical temperatures. Now, SmFeAs(O,F) is shown to undergo a transition from pinned Abrikosov-like to mobile Josephson-like vortices as the system is cooled below its critical temperature.

  • In a Josephson junction, a current flows from one superconductor to another through a barrier without any voltage being applied. SQUIDs, for example, are based on this phenomenon. Now, an iron-based multi-band superconductor shows signs of intrinsic Josephson junctions, opening up prospects for applications.

  • Regardless of what the origin of superconductivity is in the recently discovered iron-based superconductor, it would be useful to know how good these materials are for applications. Sophisticated experiments now show that SmFeAs0.75F0.25 exhibits a high and nearly isotropic critical current, a potentially important result for their use in applications.
