Sex hormone signaling declines during aging. In this Review, the authors provide an overview of the role of estrogen signaling in the maintenance of energy homeostasis and the dysregulation of this equilibrium during menopause, dissect the contributions of hormonal decline and aging to health changes and discuss current and emerging therapies.
