Access to unsaturated bicyclic lactones by overriding conventional C(sp³)–H site selectivity

Bicyclic lactones are valuable motifs for the synthesis of natural products and bioactive molecules. Now, a palladium-catalysed protocol has been developed to access unsaturated bicyclic lactones in one step from corresponding carboxylic acids. The method demonstrates reverse site selectivity for C(sp³)–H activation to form diverse bicyclic cores.

RETRACTED ARTICLE: Mechanically interlocked architecture aids an ultra-stiff and ultra-hard elastically bendable cocrystal

Molecular crystals are typically less stiff than metals or ceramics. Here the authors report an organic elastically bendable co-crystal with stiffness comparable to low-density metals, hardness similar to stainless steel and reveal the molecular mechanism which lead to these mechanical properties.

This study investigates trends in mortality and length of stay for people hospitalised with COVID-19 in England until September 2021. It shows that risks were higher for unvaccinated people and those with multiple comorbidities, and that busier hospitals had higher mortality rates at the start of the pandemic but this effect lessened over time.
