In this Review, Ohara and Hsiao explore the pathways linking the gut and the brain, particularly the communication between the gut microbiota and neurons at the intestinal neuroepithelial interface. They examine the microbial, endocrine and neural mechanisms involved in the gut microbiota–brain axis and their impact on gastrointestinal and neuropsychiatric health.
