Visceral adipose tissue (VAT), that is, white adipose tissue in the abdominal region, increases in midlife, and VAT expansion is associated with metabolic disorders. However, in this Review, the authors highlight that VAT is not inherently bad. They discuss when and why visceral fat may have harmful effects and highlight strategies to prevent or reduce its negative effect.
