Opposing Wnt signals regulate cervical squamocolumnar homeostasis and emergence of metaplasia

Chumduri, Gurumurthy et al. show that cervical squamous and columnar epithelia derive from two stem cell populations, regulated by opposing Wnt signals, and that a Wnt-repressive environment can induce metaplasia.

Distinct subtypes of proprioceptive dorsal root ganglion neurons regulate adaptive proprioception in mice

Molecular diversity of proprioceptive neuron types (Ia, Ib and II PNs) is unclear. Here, the authors characterized the functional organization and development of eight subtypes of PNs in mice. Importantly, Ia subtypes are plastic, suggesting a role in adaptive proprioception during motor behavior.

The Lkb1 metabolic sensor maintains haematopoietic stem cell survival

Haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are very sensitive to energetic and oxidative stress, and modulation of the balance between their quiescence and proliferation is needed to respond to metabolic stress while preserving HSCs' long term regenerative capacity. Here the tumour suppressor Lkb1 is shown to have a crucial role in maintaining energy homeostasis in haematopoietic cells — an effect largely independent of AMPK and mTOR signalling.

Arid1b haploinsufficiency causes autism and intellectual disability, yet the neurobiological basis of this is unknown. The authors demonstrate that Arid1b-heterozygous mice have impaired cortical interneuron development and epigenetic signatures. These mice also have cognitive and social deficits, which are reversed by treatment with a GABA^A-receptor-positive allosteric modulator.
