Abiotic formation of alkylsulfonic acids in interstellar analog ices and implications for their detection on Ryugu

Alkylsulfonic acids represent an alternative source of sulfur for the origins of life. Here the authors demonstrate, via laboratory simulation experiments, the formation of these compounds in interstellar analog ices with implications for their incorporation into asteroids such as Ryugu.

The astrochemical evolutionary traits of phospholipid membrane homochirality

Compartmentalization is crucial for life’s evolution. Yet, the origin of modern phospholipid membranes and their species-dependent homochirality remains unknown. Amphiphile detection in extraterrestrial samples suggests diverse interstellar chemistry, enriching Earth’s prebiotic chemistry with vital membrane precursors. Moreover, chiroptical properties guide research into membrane homochirality origins.

Uncovering the chiral bias of meteoritic isovaline through asymmetric photochemistry

Excess of l-amino acids in meteorites suggests an extraterrestrial origin of biomolecular homochirality, which may stem from chiral light-matter interactions. Here the authors support this hypothesis with asymmetric photolysis experiments on racemic isovaline films, showing that circularly polarized starlight can produce l-enantiomeric excesses that can be amplified during parent bodies’ alteration.

Chiroptical activity of hydroxycarboxylic acids with implications for the origin of biological homochirality

Enantiomerically-enriched hydroxycarboxylic acids have been found in meteorites, but the possible origin of this asymmetry has not been explored experimentally. Here circular dichroism/anisotropy experiments suggest a common astrochemical mechanism for the generation of enantiomeric excess in hydroxycarboxylic acids and amino acids.
