Cryo-EM structures of the ionotropic glutamate receptor GluD1 reveal a non-swapped architecture

Receptors from the delta family of ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) differ from other iGluRs in that they are not gated by glutamate. Cryo-EM structures of the rat orphan GluD1 receptor also reveal a distinct, non-swapped architecture.

CASSPER is a semantic segmentation-based particle picking algorithm for single-particle cryo-electron microscopy

George, Assaiya et al. develop a deep learning tool, CASSPER, that automates the detection of protein particles in transmission microscope images. This algorithm uses semantic segmentation and visually prepared training samples to capture the differences in the transmission intensities of microscope images, enabling automation of data processing.

Structural mechanism of glutamate receptor activation and desensitization

Cryo-electron microscopy is used to visualize the AMPA receptor GluA2 and the kainate receptor GluK2 in several functional states — having access to so many different structural states has enabled the authors to propose a molecular model for the gating cycle of glutamate receptors.

The N-terminal domain of GluR6-subtype glutamate receptor ion channels

The amino-terminal domain (ATD) of ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) mediates their assembly into AMPA-, kainate- and NMDA-sensitive subtypes. The crystal structure of the ATD from the kainate receptor GluR6 reveals a dimeric organization and likely determinants for subtype-selective assembly.
