High-resolution silkworm pan-genome provides genetic insights into artificial selection and ecological adaptation

Tong et al. describe a super pangenome assembled from long-read sequences of 545 wild and domesticated silkworms. Naturally selected (diapause, aposemantic coloration) or artificially selected (silk yield and fineness) sets of genes are delineated.

Silver lining to a climate crisis in multiple prospects for alleviating crop waterlogging under future climates

The climate crisis will increase the frequency of extreme weather events. Harrison et al. show that while global waterlogging-induced yield losses increase from 3–11% historically to 10–20% by 2080, adapting sowing periods and adopting waterlogging-tolerant genotypes can negate such yield losses.

Maturation and specialization of group 2 innate lymphoid cells through the lung-gut axis

The developmental process of group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) involves migration between different internal organs. A coding-independent function of gene and pseudogene mRNAs regulates tumour biology

The canonical role of messenger RNA (mRNA) is in protein coding and synthesis. But could mRNAs also have a role that is related to their ability to compete for microRNA binding? Here, the functional relationship between the mRNAs produced by the PTEN tumour suppressor gene and its pseudogene PTENP1 is investigated. The results suggest that pseudogenes have a biological function, in sequestering microRNAs and so affecting their regulation of gene expression.

An aberrant SREBP-dependent lipogenic program promotes metastatic prostate cancer

This study shows that inactivation of Pml in the mouse prostate turns indolent Pten-null tumors into lethal metastatic disease. The authors identify an aberrant SREBP prometastatic lipogenic program and show that a high-fat diet induces lipid accumulation in prostate tumors and is sufficient to drive metastasis.

The transcription factor Zbtb7a was previously described as an oncogene in non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Now, Pier Paolo Pandolfi and colleagues report that loss of Zbtb7a accelerates the progression of invasive prostate tumorigenesis in Pten-null mice and shows evidence of monoallelic loss in 18% of individuals with advanced prostate cancer.

Subtle variations in Pten dose determine cancer susceptibility

Pier Paolo Pandolfi and colleagues report the generation of mice that express 80% of normal levels of the PTEN tumor suppressor. The mice develop a spectrum of tumors, including breast tumors that retain two copies of Pten, suggesting that subtle changes in expression can predispose to tumorigenesis.
