Probe-ablative techniques for small kidney cancer lesions are being investigated as alternatives to partial nephrectomy in selected patients. Advances in imaging guidance that are improving outcomes and the minimally invasive nature make this approach to therapy attractive. This Review provides a critical evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques.
