High resolution X-ray crystallography has allowed to visualize hydrogen atoms and study charge distributions, however, this technique is limited to samples with superb crystallinity. Here, the authors report a sub-1.2 Å resolution cold field emission single-particle cryo-EM structure of apoferritin to visualize the hydrogen atoms as well as their charges and chemical bonding.
