Cells adapt to extracellular acidic pH through TM9SF3-mediated PI(4,5)P₂ flop

Cells must adapt to environmental changes. Here, the authors show that TM9SF3 mediates PIP₂ translocation in response to extracellular acidification, thereby regulating cell migration through cytoskeletal remodelling.

Blood DNA virome associates with autoimmune diseases and COVID-19

Analysis of the blood DNA virome in patients with COVID-19 and autoimmune disease associates endogenous HHV-6 (eHHV-6) and high anellovirus load with increased disease risk, most notably for systemic lupus erythematosus. eHHV-6 carriers show a distinct immune response.

A missense variant in FGD6 confers increased risk of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy

Zhenglin Yang and colleagues use whole-exome sequencing to identify a rare variant in the FGD6 gene that is associated with the polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy subtype of wet age-related macular degeneration. They show that FGD6 regulates proangiogenic effects together with VEGF and that the mutation results in abnormal retinal vessel development.

In situ observations of the mesophase formation of isotactic polypropylene—A fast time-resolved X-ray diffraction study

In situ observation of the formation process of mesophase of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) is reported in structural point of view. Combining a rapid temperature jump and a high-flux synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering techniques, very rapid transformation from the molten amorphous state to the mesophase has been observed. The transformation proceeded very quickly in a narrow temperature range accompanied by instantaneous fluctuations in micrometer scale, suggesting the mesophase formation proceeds similarly to spinodal decomposition.

Structure and dynamics of poly(vinyl alcohol) gels in mixtures of dimethyl sulfoxide and water

Structure studies were performed on PVA gels in mixtures of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water using various scattering methods to see the hierarchic structure. It was found that the crosslinking points are crystallites, the nearest-neighboring distance is 180–200 Å and the bicontinuous structure due to phase separation is in μm scale for the gel in DMSO/water (60/40). Dynamics of three kinds of PVA gels were also studied in nm scale using neutron spin echo technique.
