  • Combining radiation therapy (RT) with immunotherapy has had limited therapeutic benefits in the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNSCC). Here, the authors present a multi-omics analysis of patient biopsies pre- and post- hypofractionated RT and uncover RT-mediated depletion of tumor-reactive CD8+ T cells as the underlying cause of immunologic radioresistance in HNSCC.

  • The bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is a ubiquitous human ectoparasite with global distribution. Here, the authors sequence the genome of the bed bug and identify reductions in chemosensory genes, expansion of genes associated with blood digestion and genes linked to pesticide resistance.

  • Fragment screening and medicinal chemistry optimization led to development of a small-molecule inhibitor of RING1B–BMI1 E3 ligase, blocking the H2A ubiquitination activity of the Polycomb repressive complex 1 and inducing differentiation in leukemia cells.

  • Low-cost manufacturing of large-scale thermally activated delayed fluorescence organic light-emitting diodes has been restricted due to their incompatibility with solution processing techniques. Here, authors develop inkjet printing ink formulation to fabricate patterns without use of lithography.

  • The epigenomic landscape of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remains to be explored. Here, integrative epigenomic analysis of primary human RCC samples and RCC GWAS risk SNPs identifies transcription-factor specific subtypes and enrichment of risk variants in allelically-imbalanced peaks.

  • Jones et al. examine the generalizability of the valence–dominance model of social judgements of faces in 41 countries across 11 world regions. They find evidence of both generalizability and variation, depending on the analytical method.

  • The Cancer Genome Atlas consortium reports on their genome-wide characterization of somatic alterations in colorectal cancer; in addition to revealing a remarkably consistent pattern of genomic alteration, with 24 genes being significantly mutated, the study identifies new targets for therapeutic intervention and suggests an important role for MYC-directed transcriptional activation and repression.
