A heuristic study of the Mullins effect in reinforced rubber by using the Weibull distribution

Stress softening, or the Mullins effect, critically affects the performance of filler-reinforced rubber. This study proposes a simplified model based on the destruction of particle aggregates, using extreme value statistics to relate damage to stretch ratio. The model accurately predicts behaviors of rubber filled with carbon black or silica, showing good agreement with experiments across varying filler contents. It offers a practical tool for designing durable rubber materials.

Reliability of intrinsic birefringence estimated via the modified stress-optical rule

Intrinsic birefringence, Δn₀, is a material constant for the orientational birefringence of polymers, and has been measured by many researchers with various methods. However, the reported values of the same polymer sometimes disagree among the researchers because determination of the orientation degree is somehow complicated. Alternatively, a new method using the modified stress-optical rule (MSOR) was proposed for Δn₀ measurement. In this study, literature data of the Δn₀ for various polymers are assessed and the reliability of Δn₀ estimated via the MSOR is discussed.

Viscoelastic properties and birefringence of phenolic resins

Dynamic viscoelasticity and dynamic birefringence of phenolic resins having different cross-linking density were examined to clarify the relationship between structure and viscoelastic properties. Dynamic modulus was found to be insensitive to cross-linking density at a high cross-linking density, where molar mass between the cross-linking points was smaller than the viscoelastic segment size of phenolic resin, whereas the complex strain-optical coefficient reflects more sensitively the cross-linking density.

Memory effect in elastic modulus of a hydrogen-bonding polymer network

Time evolution behavior is described for a transient network formed via hydrogen bonds in a random copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol. As the cross-link density depends on temperature, the storage modulus G′ of the system slowly evolves toward equilibrium at the experimental temperature, T_a, after changing the temperature from higher or lower than T_a. The ‘memory effect’ (the structure developed at a certain temperature is preserved after changing the temperature) found in the system is discussed in detail.

Through comparative genomics using PDX models of androgen-dependent (AD) and androgen-resistant (AR) tumors, Makino et al. identify opioid receptor kappa 1 (OPRK1) as being associated with castration-resistance. Loss of OPRK1 function delays castration-resistance and inhibits castration-resistant growth of prostate cancer cells in culture and in vivo, suggesting OPRK1 as a therapeutic target.

Autonomous trisomic rescue of Down syndrome cells

Continuously cultivated iPSCs with chromosome 21 trisomy spontaneously reverted to normal diploids. This trisomy rescue occurred without genetic manipulation, chemical treatment, or exposure to irradiation. The revertant cells can serve as a reference for drug screening and as raw materials for regenerative medicine and cell-based therapy.

Design of birefringence and its wavelength dispersion for cellulose derivatives using substitution, low-mass additives, and porous structures

We successfully controlled birefringence and its wavelength dispersion of cellulose esters by choosing different ester substitution groups and sites, controlling the orientation of the crystal, adding low-mass molecules, and forming microscale porous structures. The substitution of two ester groups could provide extraordinary wavelength dispersion of birefringence, which is important for wide-range retardation films. The low-mass additives enhance birefringence values due to the intermolecular orientation correlation with matrix cellulose esters. The anisotropic microporous structure produced by thermoinduced phase separation generates form birefringence, which improves the total birefringence of cellulose esters.
