Combining density functional theory with macroscopic QED for quantum light-matter interactions in 2D materials

The development of a quantitative and predictive theory of quantum light-matter interactions in ultrathin materials is both a conceptual and computational challenge. Here, the authors develop such a framework by combining density functional theory with macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, and use it to quantify the Purcell effect in van der Waals heterostructures.

Studies of pear-shaped nuclei using accelerated radioactive beams

An experimental study of certain short-lived isotopes of radon and radium has found clear octupole deformation in the nuclei of the latter — that is, these nuclei are pear-shaped; the results enable discrimination between differing theoretical approaches to octupole correlations.

Cygnus X-3 revealed as a Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source by IXPE

The accretion geometry of X-ray binary Cygnus X-3 is determined here from IXPE observations. X-ray polarization reveals a narrow funnel with reflecting walls, which focuses emission, making Cyg X-3 appear as an ultraluminous X-ray source.
