Echinacoside (ECH) is the representative phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs) that are responsible for the bioactivities of traditional Chinese medicine Cistanche Herba. Here, the authors elucidate the biosynthetic pathway of ECH in Cistanche tubulosa and synthesize 23 PhGs in tobacco.
