Identification and characterization of a novel botulinum neurotoxin

There are seven well-established types of Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs). Here the authors report the identification and characterization of a new type of BoNT—BoNT/X—which cleaves a different site on canonical BoNTs substrates and targets SNARE family members not cleaved by known BoNTs.

Genetically encoded fluorescent indicators for imaging intracellular potassium ion concentration

Yi Shen et al. report two classes of genetically encoded fluorescent potassium indicators, based on FRET (KIRIN1 and KIRIN1-GR) or single-wavelength fluorescence change (GINKO1). These K⁺ indicators enable imaging of intracellular K⁺ dynamics in live cells with a multiplexing potential.

Artificial melanin particles: new building blocks for biomimetic structural coloration

Melanin, a black component of human hair, plays an important role in bright structural colorations in nature. Polydopamine-based artificial melanin particles, inspired by natural melanin and its important role in structural coloration, were used to produce bright structural colors by controlling light reflection and absorption. A variety of structural coloration characteristics have become possible through our investigations of the assembly structure, composition, shape, and application of artificial melanin particles.

Development of HRP-mediated enzymatic polymerization under heterogeneous conditions for the preparation of functional particles

This focus review describes a novel research concerning horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated enzymatic polymerization under aqueous heterogeneous conditions as follows: (i) monodisperse polymer particles were prepared by enzymatic miniemulsion polymerization using surfmer (surfactant+monomer). (ii) Polymer particles stabilized by β-diketone moieties were prepared by enzymatic emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization. (iii) A novel method of surface-initiated enzymatic graft polymerization was used to synthesize core-shell particles.
