Deriving the skyrmion Hall angle from skyrmion lattice dynamics

Skyrmions, when driven by any applied force, experience an addition sideways motion known as the skyrmion hall effect. Here, Brearton et al. present a reciprocal space method for determining the strength of the skyrmion hall effect, making measurement possible for skyrmion lattices.

Direct experimental determination of the topological winding number of skyrmions in Cu₂OSeO₃

Experimental demonstrations of topologically nontrivial states in magnetic films currently rely on indirect comparisons of theoretical models with microscopic images. Here the authors show that resonant X-ray scattering provides direct information on the topology of magnetic textures.

Manipulation of skyrmion motion by magnetic field gradients

Manipulation of skyrmions is one of the keys to achieving the skyrmion based spintronic devices. Here the authors show the skyrmions in Cu₂OSeO₃ can be rotated collectively with fixed velocity–radius relationship under a static magnetic field gradient which enables a local, Joule heat-free control of skyrmions.

Observation of magnetic vortex pairs at room temperature in a planar α-Fe₂O₃/Co heterostructure

Magnetic vortices formed in antiferromagnetic haematite and imprinted on a Co ferromagnetic over-layer have been observed using X-ray magnetic linear and circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy. These vortex pairs can be manipulated by the application of magnetic fields.
