Apoplastic metabolomics reveals sugars as mesophyll messengers regulating guard cell ion transport under red light

Guard cells define microscopic stomatal pores for CO₂ uptake and water loss. Characterization of the extracellular metabolome revealed sugars as ‘mesophyll messengers’ from the leaf interior that enhance stomatal opening via regulation of the guard-cell H⁺-ATPase and anion channels.

Blood DNA virome associates with autoimmune diseases and COVID-19

Analysis of the blood DNA virome in patients with COVID-19 and autoimmune disease associates endogenous HHV-6 (eHHV-6) and high anellovirus load with increased disease risk, most notably for systemic lupus erythematosus. eHHV-6 carriers show a distinct immune response.

DNA methylation is reconfigured at the onset of reproduction in rice shoot apical meristem

The shoot apical meristem of flowering plants transitions from forming leaves to floral organs. Here Higo et al. show that DNA methylation of many transposons that are hypermethylated in gametes is established in the SAM before flowering, suggesting it protects against harmful transposition long before germ cell differentiation.

The apoplastic pH is a key determinant in the hypocotyl growth response to auxin dosage and light

Auxin can promote or inhibit hypocotyl elongation. This biphasic effect has puzzled generations of plant biologists. Wang et al. shows that the decreasing apoplastic pH, stimulated by auxin, underlies the change in hypocotyl growth response.

Identification and improvement of isothiocyanate-based inhibitors on stomatal opening to act as drought tolerance-conferring agrochemicals

The authors describe a brassicales-specific metabolite BITC as a stomatal opening inhibitor that suppresses PM H⁺-ATPase phosphorylation. They develop BITC derivatives with higher inhibitory activity that act as drought tolerance–conferring agrochemicals.

Improved utilisation of nitrogen and carbon could boost agricultural productivity. Chemical inhibition of stomatal differentiation by perturbation of the master-regulatory bHLH heterodimer via an ACT-Like domain

This study reports Stomidazolone, a doubly-sulfonylated imidazolone that inhibits stomatal differentiation by binding to the ACT-Like domain of MUTE, disrupting its interaction with the bHLH partner SCREAM, which expands the chemical toolkit for manipulating bHLH-ACTL protein interactions, offering new avenues for controlling plant development.

Chemical hijacking of auxin signaling with an engineered auxin–TIR1 pair

A synthetic, orthogonal pair of the plant hormone auxin and its receptor TIR1 was engineered to hijack auxin signaling without interfering with the endogenous system. The synthetic system conclusively demonstrates the role for TIR1 in auxin-induced acid growth.

Training instance segmentation neural network with synthetic datasets for crop seed phenotyping

Toda et al. train a neural network algorithm for crop seed segmentation using synthetically generated datasets. The model achieves very high precision and is effective for a variety of seeds like barley, rice, and lettuce. Their approach will reduce human labor costs needed to prepare training datasets for similar algorithms for agricultural applications.

This report reviews the seminal features and characteristics of free-standing polymeric ultrathin films (nanosheets), including fabrication methods, mechanical properties and biomedical and health-care applications (for example, wound dressings, tissue engineering materials and bioelectronic devices). ‘Nanosheet technology’ is a promising approach for the development of advanced medical applications and health-care practices in surgery and regenerative medicine, as well as for connecting the human body to electronic interfaces for future medical applications.
