Unveiling the reconstruction of copper bimetallic catalysts during CO₂ electroreduction

Reconstruction of Cu catalysts under electrochemical CO₂ reduction conditions is a well-reported phenomenon. Here the reconstruction of bimetallic Cu–X catalysts is investigated to reveal the roles of atomic miscibility and intermediate binding on surface reconstruction and the resulting effects on product selectivity.

Structural-relaxation-driven electron doping of amorphous oxide semiconductors by increasing the concentration of oxygen vacancies in shallow-donor states

The effects of structural relaxation (SR) on the electronic state of oxygen vacancies (V_O s) in amorphous oxide semiconductors is investigated. Without redox reactions, the concentration of V_O s in the shallow-donor state (N_DS) increases about 10³ times with increases in the annealing temperature from 300 to 450 °C. The reduction in the free volume size and transformation of V_O s in either deep-donor or electron-trap states into the shallow-donor state during SR is the primary mechanism responsible for the increase in N_DS.

Controlling the reaction pathway in electrochemical CO₂ reduction for the selective production of hydrocarbons or oxygenates is challenging. Now, control over atomic immiscibility in Cu and Cu–Ag alloyed catalysts can steer CO₂ reduction products from ethylene towards ethanol.

Electrochemical upgrade of CO₂ from amine capture solution

Electrochemical conversion of CO₂ into high-value products is attractive for lowering net carbon emissions. Lee et al. present the valorization of chemisorbed CO₂ to CO in an aqueous monoethanolamine electrolyte via tailoring of the electrochemical double layer, with 72% Faradaic efficiency at 50 mA cm^–2.
