Modulating the phase of condensates can unravel the roles of condensation. Here the authors engineer a droplet-forming peptide that promotes FUS condensation in the dark and triggers FUS aggregation upon photoinitiation, both in vitro and in cells: this shows a correlation between FUS phase transitions and proteinopathy.
