Quantum confinement-induced anti-electrooxidation of metallic nickel electrocatalysts for hydrogen oxidation

Non-precious metals used at the anode of anion-exchange-membrane fuel cells to catalyse hydrogen oxidation are prone to self-oxidation. Here Zhou and colleagues report that a quantum well-like catalytic structure containing Ni nanoparticles within a C-doped MoO_x/MoO_x heterojunction can mitigate such degradation by a gating operation.

Locking the lattice oxygen in RuO₂ to stabilize highly active Ru sites in acidic water oxidation

Blocking the sulfonate group in Nafion to unlock platinum’s activity in membrane electrode assemblies

The full potential of the well-known platinum oxygen reduction catalyst has not been realized in membrane electrode assembly for fuel cells due to the detrimental impacts of the required ionomer layer.
