Abstract
THE earthquake, which caused considerable alarm throughout the North of England on the night of the 17th, was felt severely here between 11.5 and 11.10 P.M. The sky, which had been overcast during the evening, suddenly cleared up towards 11 P.M., but was again completely covered at 11.15. The barometer was heaving during the night, but no special disturbance is registered on the photographic curve; the corrected reading at 11 P.M. was 29.887, and 29.885 at 11h 11m.
