Abstract
GENERALLY speaking, proverbs are the resultant expression of observed facts, but the efficacy of oil upon troubled waters would appear to be a proverb which, instead of being preceded by and founded upon trial and experiment, has rather led to the scientific demonstration and establishment of the truth it asserts.
