Abstract
THIS volume forms the fifth of the Columbia University Biological Series edited by Prof. H. F. Osborn and Prof. E. B. Wilson, and it is appropriately placed beside the well-known earlier memoirs which deal with historic, phylpgenetic and ontpgenetic evolution. The traditions of the series are sufficient warrant for the admirable editing, printing and general appearance of the volume.
