Abstract
(1) WE have carefully read a considerable part of Mr. Hollis Godfrey's book, and have reluctantly come to the conclusion that as an elementary text-book it is not a complete success. It is true that the book contains much useful information, which is well arranged, that it is well printed and luxuriously illustrated, and that its general appearance is attractive; but the explanations are slovenly, the similes are childish, the historial references betray a curious, ignorance of the original memoirs, and many of the illustrations, excellent though they are as photographs, are peculiarly inept.
