Estimation of Radioactive Hydrogen as Tritiobutane in the Geiger Counter

Abstract

A METHOD for the assay of tritium has been described by White, Campbell and Payne1, who convert radioactive water into methane by means of aluminium carbide and then ‘count’ the methane in the proportional counter. Since this method necessitates additional proportional electronic equipment, I have found it more convenient to assay tritium in the form of radioactive butane, which can be ‘counted’ in the Geiger region and which, moreover, being condensable at liquid air temperature, is easily manipulated in a vacuum system.
